Signals Before the Catastrophic: Why Detection Experience Isn't Enough

There is a tremendous amount of experience in artificial intelligence available to this industry right now. There is just as much in detection systems — laser-based, infrared, LIDAR. That expertise is real, and it is not scarce.

What is rarely embedded alongside it is boots on the ground. Upstream oil and gas. Been there, done that. You cannot man a wellsite 24/7

Not with all the disciplines a site actually requires. The SCADA technician, the operator, the chemical specialist, the compressor specialist — everyone who touches that wellsite on a weekly, monthly, or quarterly cadence — cannot be standing on it around the clock. No staffing model makes that arithmetic work.

But a control room can be there around the clock, provided it is given the right kind of data: data culled and filtered so the people watching are not overwhelmed. Given that, a control room knows something is happening before it becomes a real problem.

The brakes on your car

The intuition is one every operator already has.

You get in your car and drive it every day. One day you get in and something doesn’t sound right. You may or may not know how to repair a set of brakes — but you know something is going wrong with those brakes, and you know it well before it is time to fix them.

Ignore it, and more damage is done the longer it goes between detection and repair.

The same is true of leaks. The same is true of sound anomalies, whether the source is a compressor, valving, pumps, or any other part of the system. There are signals prior to the catastrophic that can be picked up, if you have 24/7 surveillance.
